» Last Month: Robin Leach gave The Complete History of Abbey Fields to what was almost a capacity house. He aroused a great deal of interest and we’re pleased that he sold out his stock of books and actually took orders. A thorough and commendable piece of research.
» This month: Dr John Hunt on Warriors, Warlords and Saints – themes in Mercian history.
» Next month: Monday 11th of December. A members’ ‘Seasonal Night’ with appropriate refreshments, which will start with a short, and very light-hearted, team quiz with a loosely historical theme. At the usual time of 7:30 for 7:45 start. Offers of goodies for the refreshments to Jan Cooper or Margaret Kane, please.

» Warwickshire Local History Society:
- Tuesday 21st November 2017 Members’ Evening – Short presentations by members of the Society
- Saturday 25th November 2017 For Christmas festivities they are visiting Salford Hall, Abbots Salford, Nr. Bidford, a fascinating grade 1 listed house and now Salford Hall Hotel. Starting at 2 p.m., Dr. Nat Alcock will lead a tour around the exterior and interior of this building, which was originally a C15th Monastic House. At 3 p.m. they will have an enactment by Guarderobe, relating to the Catholic history of the house, followed by a seasonal tea at 4 p.m. A booking form is available on the website.
» CADAS: 14th November Title: A Medieval Barber Surgeon Lecturer Paul Thompson, 7.30pm at the Friends Meeting House, Hill Street, Coventry
» Lapworth Local History Group: The final meeting of the 2017 programme on Tuesday 28th November, is a talk entitled The Lost Railway by one of their committee members, Paul Baker, who will tell the fascinating story behind the building of the railway branch line that once ran between Lapworth and Henley-in-Arden. Meetings at LAPWORTH VILLAGE HALL OLD WARWICK ROAD (Kingswood) LAPWORTH B94 6LD. This is halfway between the Navigation Inn and the Boot Inn for anyone who might get lost looking.
Please note: Jan Cooper’s next talk at the Library “John of Gaunt – the Power and the Passion” was incorrectly given last month as November the 21st. It is actually on the 28th. However, the talk is fully subscribed, so if you haven’t booked, regrettably, you are too late.

Historic Coventry Trust
I would like to invite local heritage organisations to a meeting on 23rd November at 12 noon at the Coventry Telegraph building.
The purpose of the meeting is:
- To explain the Trust’s plans to become a ‘National Trust’ type organisation as guardian of the city’s heritage in perpetuity and to get input into this from the other heritage organisations
- To explore how the establishment of the Trust can support other community organisations going forward – such as more powerful advocacy, advice on fundraising, possible future direct financial support etc
- To explore the benefits in collective action and whether the organisations can support the Trust in widening community involvement
- To discuss how the Trust may help increase engagement and dialogue with community organisations on the new programmes such as City of Culture; Heritage Action Zone; Great Place Scheme and Cultural Destinations Fund
- Any other opportunities or concerns
The Trust is suggesting the establishment of a permanent group, similar to the arts sector where the Friday 13th Group encompasses all of the smaller arts organisations. This has been quite successful in engagement and joint working and has brought in a lot of groups.[I would be grateful if you could confirm whether you are able to attend and provide contact details for other groups you feel may wish to be involved.]
