Cosy Cafe – Then & Now

The Cosy Cafe
The Cosy Cafe

This postcard shows the Cosy Cafe on Castle Green, which served teas to tourists who came to the town to take in the majestic ruins of Kenilworth Castle. It boasted sumptuous interiors such as the Lustre Room, with lace tablecloths and horse brasses hanging from the ceiling, and a small garden for those brave enough to take tea at the whim of the Great British weather. A roof advertisement advertises ‘Teas with Hovis”.

Number 2, Tudor Cottage, has been Grade II listed since April 1968 as follows: “No 2 (Tudor Cottage) (Formerly Cosy Cafe) Early C19 whitewashed brick to some exposed earlier timber-frame.2 storeys, 4 windows, early C19 casements. Door with early C19 gabled weather hood. Penthouse window on right hand. Old tiled roof. All the listed buildings on Castle Green form a group”.

Today, little of the timber framing is visible and the cafe has been subdivided back into three cottages, numbered 2A, 2 and 3 Castle Green.
